(fl ?Treviso, c1720–68). Italian violin maker. Born in Alba, he worked principally in Treviso, near Venice; he is also reputed to have worked in Mantua and Venice but his printed labels are invariably marked Treviso (or its latinizations, Tarvisio and Tarvisii). Examples of his work recall that of Matteo Goffriller and appear typically Venetian in their long waist, upright soundholes, and rather flat upper and lower bouts. Arching tends to be flat and the scroll large, with a long pegbox. His workmanship is uneven, but the typically red-brown varnish is of excellent texture. One of his violins was owned and played by Mozart. His printed labels are in various sizes, with his name also appearing as Pietro Antonio delta Costa or Petrus Antonius a Costa; they occasionally have an extra line or two acknowledging adherence to the brothers Amati model. Although little known, he was an unusually accomplished maker; authentic examples of his work are unfortunately rare.
