Estonian piano manufacturer, located in Tallinn. The firm claims roots extending from 1893, but other sources point to its origin in a company founded by Ernst Hiis (born Ihse) (b Tartu, 16 April 1872; d Tallinn, 29 Oct 1964) in 1903 and sold by him in 1915. Hiis had previously worked for Robert Rathke in Tartu; he later worked in the Russian and German piano industries, and remained in Germany until 1918 when he returned to Estonia, where he was employed at a piano factory in Tartu until 1922. In 1923, after visits to Erard and Gaveau in Paris, Hiis became the manager of the new Astron piano company, which by 1924 employed some 40 workers. In 1927 Hiis again opened his own workshop, producing uprights and small grands under the name J. Beckner. He reportedly continued manufacturing pianos during World War II, and in 1950 became chief engineer of the new state-owned Tallinn Piano Factory, established by order of Stalin and headed by Osvald Kuub.
