In the argot of American popular music, a term for any aerophone, commonly the saxophone but applicable to all woodwinds and brasses, especially those played by soloists. This usage perhaps predates the employment of orchestral horns in jazz (at latest by the 1940s) but might imply something of the notorious difficulty of playing the orchestral horn; a phallic connotation is also possible. Like the term ax, “horn” in this generic sense is not a lax expression but reflects jazz players’ focus on the essence of their art; morphological distinctions among types of winds are irrelevant to players accustomed to doubling on a variety of equally useful instruments....
