Obsolete transverse flute of New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands, made from a curved piece of bamboo, 1 metre long or longer, closed at both ends. There is a hole at each end, one blown and the other fingered, producing two notes a tone apart. It is reported to have been played both as a mouth flute and as a nose flute, but was not as a nose flute. The embouchure hole is relatively close to the upper end of the tube and when the instrument is in blowing position this places the upper end against a nostril, accounting for mistaken observations of nose-blowing....
