American manufacturer of classical guitar strings. The company was founded in 1947 in the basement of Albert Augustine’s New York City home. Augustine (b Denmark, 1900; d New York, NY, 1967) emigrated to the USA in 1926 from his family home in Germany to pursue guitar making. While working as dishwasher in a Manhattan restaurant, he met his future wife, Rose Lipschitz (Lewis) (b New York, NY, 10 Feb 1910; d New York, NY, 21 April 2003), a chemistry student working as a waitress. They married in 1928, forming a partnership in which Rose was often the driving force, a master of networking that provided innumerable contacts and made their home a centre of activity for classical guitarists.
