Short wooden folk trumpet of France (the Bourbonnais mountains). It is hollowed from a piece of wood, with a hole burned in as an embouchure. Said to date from medieval times, it was used to signal from mountain to mountain and also to replace the church bells in Holy Week, as well as to call people together. It was last heard of in the 19th century and is now extinct....
