Xylophone of the Alas people in the Kutacane area of Aceh province, Sumatra. Its light, hard wooden bars range from about 35 cm long by 4 cm wide to about 45 cm long by 5 cm wide. They have a semicircular upper surface and are nailed to a wooden frame, but separated from it by a thick piece of rubber. The player beats the bars with two wooden sticks, playing the main melody with the right hand and interlocking or repeated notes on one pitch with the left....
