Whizzer used by children in Slovakia. A walnut is pierced by a stick on which it is free to spin. A cord passes through a hole in the nut and is wound around the stick with the distal end of the cord tied to the stick. Holding the nut in one hand and pulling the free end of the string by a loop or toggle at the end makes the stick rotate and rewind the string so that the stick whizzes to and fro. A second nut affixed to the lower end of the stick acts as a flywheel. The sound is probably produced by a combination of the stick rubbing or rattling against the nut held in the hand, the friction of the string against the sides of its hole in the nut, and perturbation of the air due to rotation of the flywheel....
