(b Rome, Italy, c 1724/5; d Rome, June 21, 1794). Italian violin maker. At an early age he entered the workshop of his uncle Michele Platner, whose shop he inherited on the latter’s death, in 1752. He worked very much in the style of his master. His cellos are in the Roman tradition, the violins usually more delicate. His pegboxes show elegance, and his varnish is usually a transparent golden colour with occasional reddish or brownish tint. On his labels, his name is Latinized to Julius Caesar Gigli Romanus....
