(b Olomouc, Moravia [now Czech Republic], Feb 19, 1756; d Vienna, Austria, Sept 17, 1813). Viennese organ and piano maker, of Moravian origin. He became a citizen of Vienna in 1785, and applied to be Court organ and instrument maker in 1794, but was unsuccessful until 1800, after appealing to the Emperor for the vacant position previously held by Johann Wimola (b Brno, Moravia, 28 Nov 1754; d Vienna, Austria, 22 Feb 1800). After Kober’s death his neighbour Ferdinand Hoffmann was named guardian to the widow and five young children. One daughter later married the organ builder Christoph Erler.

Surviving pianos include an unsigned square (c1785, A.W.t) and an unsigned grand (c1785–90, attributed to Kober based upon the similarity of their actions to that of a signed and dated square (1788, The grand and the c...
