Acoustic-electronic hybrid instrument. The first meta-trumpet was developed in 1993 for the trumpet player and composer Jonathan Impett at the University of East Anglia Electro-acoustic Music Studios. Designed to enable a closer relationship between performer, instrument, and the composition or improvisation, the meta-trumpet system involves a trumpet fitted with acoustic and motion sensors whose output is converted into MIDI signals, providing data for the associated processing software. The program uses these incoming data along with stored data and instructions to determine outputs that are sent to MIDI-controlled instruments and processors. The performer and composer both determine the system’s response. The resulting sounds integrate the sound and motions made while playing the trumpet with the software-controlled sound processing elements. Various software tools are provided for accessing and processing the stored data. The programming language allows complex event processing and compositional techniques. MIDI files can be written or read for output or further processing....
