Rumpel [Rumpl], Peter

(b Kamnik, Slovenia, 1787; d Kamnik, 1861). Slovenian organ and piano builder. He lived in Kamnik but worked in central Slovenia, Croatia, and Austria. He completed more than 100 organs, the later ones showing some Romantic influence. Their style suggests that Rumpel was a pupil of an unknown Viennese organ builder. His organs, distinguished by the high quality of their cases, typically have about 12 registers, but his last and largest one, for the abbey church of St Paul in Lavantthal, Austria (1859), has 25 registers. Some of his assistants became successful independent organ builders; they include Franc Goršič (1836–98) and both of Rumpel’s sons, August and Johann.
