(flc1822–72). American piano maker. He is documented in New York from the early 1820s and might have come from England as an agent for the Stodart firm of piano makers, but no definite evidence links Adam with that family. A William Stodart who sold pianos in Richmond, Virginia, about 1818 might have been related; William Stodart sold music published by William Dubois in New York, and from 1822 to 1834 Adam Stodart joined Dubois as Dubois & Stodart, with Stodart managing piano manufacture and sales while Dubois provided financial backing. An A. Stodart who might have been Adam advertised in the 1 Feb 1834 Richmond Enquirer that he tuned and repaired pianos and sold Dubois & Stodart pianos at John Turpin’s Cabinet Ware-rooms. In 1835 Adam partnered with the lithographer Nathaniel Currier as Stodart & Currier, then from 1836 to 1844 joined John Dunham and Horatio Worcester in the piano firm Stodart, Worcester & Dunham, continued as Stodart & Dunham until ...
