Since the earliest days of opera it has been economically more practical, in many sets of circumstances, for opera to be presented by travelling troupes rather than by resident companies. Such troupes have been active in various European countries throughout the history of opera; in the USA they flourished particularly during the second half of the 19th century, largely because of the huge distances and isolated communities hungry for cultural entertainment....
