(b Otaki, June 10, 1915; d London, June 26, 1971). New Zealand bass. In 1947 he obtained a government scholarship to study in London, under Charles Kennedy Scott and Steuart Wilson and at the Joan Cross Opera School. He was appointed to the resident company at Covent Garden, making his début as the Speaker in Die Zauberflöte in 1951. For the next three years he sang a wide range of roles there, creating Dansker in Billy Budd (1951) and the ballad-singer in Gloriana (1953). After three years he began a freelance career, making frequent guest appearances at Covent Garden as well as with Sadler’s Wells, Scottish Opera and other companies.
