Ispirazione, L’ (‘Inspiration’)

Melodramma in three acts by Sylvano Bussotti to his own libretto after Ernst Bloch’s short story Die gutmachende Muse from his Spuren (1930); Florence, Teatro Comunale, 26 May 1988.
In the year 2031, a new opera is being rehearsed by the director Harno Lupo (bass) at his theatre. A chorus of computers and robots under the baton of a ‘Kapellmeister’ (bass) is rehearsing an absurd score when Mastro Wolfango (baritone), an old violinist, is heard snoring; the enraged conductor interrupts the rehearsal and leaves. Mastro Wolfango is fired from his position; his wife Argía (soprano) criticizes him, while his daughter Serena (soprano) is clandestinely copying the parts for an opera that Mastro Wolfango has written in secret during years of poverty and lack of recognition. Mastro Wolfango surprises Serena, and after a scene she leaves the house of her parents. Later, found in extreme poverty, Mastro Wolfango is brought by a messenger (baritone) to the opera house where Serena – who has become a famous singer – is performing for the first time the leading role in his opera. Mastro Wolfango witnesses the triumphant success of his work....
