Dutch family of singers.

(b Deventer, 1828; d Rome, 1889). Soprano. She made her début in 1846 at The Hague as Rachel (La Juive). From 1849 to 1851 she appeared with the French Opera in New Orleans, singing Fidès in the American première of Le prophète. In 1853 she sang Norma at Toronto; after further touring in the USA and Canada, in 1855 she went to Italy. She sang at the Lyceum Theatre, London, in 1856 and at La Scala, as Abigaille (Nabucco), Joan of Arc and Lady Macbeth, in 1858. At S Carlo she took part in the first performance of Viveconte’s Luisa Strozzi (1862); she returned to La Scala for Mercadante’s Il bravo (1863).
