(b Florence, Oct 1, 1931). Italian composer, stage designer and director . Born into a Tuscan-Venetian family with strong artistic tendencies he entered the Florence Conservatory in 1940, where he studied the violin with Maglioni and the piano with Dallapiccola. In 1944 he interrupted his studies in order to dedicate himself to composition, which he studied independently in Florence and later in Paris. More important for his development than formal academic training in composition were encounters with Max Deutsch, John Cage (Darmstadt, 1958), Pierre Boulez and Heinz-Klaus Metzger. From the late 1960s he began to develop a highly successful career as a stage designer in Italian opera houses, with productions of the standard Italian repertory in Turin, Florence, Bergamo and Venice during the 1970s.
