(b New York, July 12, 1926; d Rancho Mirage, CA, Dec 15, 2002). American conductor and administrator. He studied music theory and composition at Yale and later at Columbia University, and then worked as accompanist for Columbia Opera Workshop and American Theatre Wing. In 1956 he founded the Santa Fe Opera, where he conducted a wide repertory, including many works by Richard Strauss; he also conducted in other cities in the USA and Canada.
