(b Aversa, Dec 17, 1749; d Venice, Jan 11, 1801). Italian composer. He was a central figure in opera, particularly comic opera, of the late 18th century.

The son of Gennaro and Anna di Francesco Cimmarosa (as his name is spelt on his baptismal certificate), he was taken from Aversa to Naples a few days after his birth. His father was employed as a stone-mason in the construction of the Capodimonte Palace; in the course of work he lost his life in a fall from scaffolding.
