Opera in three acts by hans werner Henze to a libretto by w. h. Auden and chester Kallman ; Schwetzingen, 20 May 1961 (in a German translation by Ludwig Landgraf).

Henze asked Auden and Kallman for an opera libretto in 1958, specifying a scenario that would require ‘tender, beautiful noises’. The première at the Schwetzingen Festival was conducted by Heinrich Bender and produced by Henze himself, with a cast that included Eva-Marie Rogner, Ingeborg Bremert, Lilian Benningsen, Friedrich Lenz, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Karl Christian Kohn.
