(b Gütersloh, July 1, 1926). German composer . His early enthusiasms were divided between music and the plastic arts, though he was determined from an early age to follow a musical career. After overcoming parental resistance he was allowed to study the piano and percussion at a school for orchestral musicians in Brunswick while a pupil at the high school in Bielefeld. He began to compose at the age of 12, before he had received any formal training. Even when he was in his early teens his natural instincts led him towards modernism in literature and music, towards the very writers, composers and artists condemned as decadent and proscribed by the Nazis: he felt the cultural barrenness of the Third Reich profoundly....
