(b Moscow, 23 April/May 5, 1869; d Salzburg, May 22, 1949). German composer and conductor. He gained some of his earliest musical experience in the theatre, as a spectator in the orchestra pit of the Frankfurt Stadttheater, where his violinist father was music director. He received his formal musical education at the Hoch Conservatory, Frankfurt, whose Brahmsian director, Bernhard Scholz, condemned a student cello concerto by him for its inclusion of three trombones and some harmonic irregularities. These Scholz pessimistically diagnosed as signs of Wagnerism....
