(b Fleetwood, Dec 22, 1954). English mezzo-soprano . She studied at the Birmingham School of Music, the RAM and the National Opera Studio. After winning the ENO Young Artists competition in 1981 she joined the company the next year and made her début as Mercédès (Carmen). A wide range of roles followed including Britten’s Lucretia in 1984; she created Eurydice in Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus (1986) and won special distinction as Penelope in Il ritorno d’Ulisse (1989). Her Covent Garden début was as Thibault (Don Carlos) in 1983, and she appeared at Glyndebourne in 1985 as Mercédès; at Zürich in 1986 she sang Cornelia in Giulio Cesare under Harnoncourt. Her video recordings include Dorabella, directed by Jonathan Miller, for whose Rigoletto production in English she sang and recorded Maddalena, and Britten’s Lucretia. Her rich, velvety tone, ease of production and musical sensitivity are also heard frequently in concerts....
