(b Vienna, Sept 13, 1874; d Los Angeles, July 13, 1951). Austro-Hungarian, later American composer. He was born into a Jewish family of rather modest means. His father died when he was 16, and he was obliged to leave school and take a job. He therefore received no formal musical education, though his near-contemporary Alexander von Zemlinsky gave him lessons in counterpoint and composition. He very quickly made up for his late start.
