Polevaya, Viktoriya Valeriyevnalocked

  • Nina Sergeyevna Shurova

(b Kiev, Sept 11, 1962). Ukrainian composer. She graduated from Karabyts's class at the Kiev Conservatory in 1989, started teaching orchestration, score reading and choral arrangement there in 1990, and completed her postgraduate studies with Kolodub in 1996. Her refined, even elitist works are marked by a spiritual and subtly intellectual outlook; she is drawn to philosophical subjects which frequently find expression in programmatic works. She confidently handles complex techniques – often in unusual combinations, such as a meeting of gagaku and the avant garde – and has successfully created an ‘event’ with her Progulka v pustote (‘Walks in the Void’). She has made occasional forays into the world of folk music.
