(b Vancouver, July 6, 1927). Canadian composer and pianist. She studied in Vancouver and California before entering the Juilliard School, New York, where her teachers were Lhévinne and Edward Steuermann (piano) and Vittorio Giannini and Bernard Wagenaar (composition). Claman’s early works include Primitive Dance (1945) for piano, three songs to texts by James Joyce (1948–50), Prelude (1950) for orchestra, the ballet Le rêve fantasque (1950) and the musical comedy Timber! (1952). She went to London in 1953, where she wrote music for television and songs for the theatre. She married the English writer Richard Morris and they lived in Toronto from 1958 until the mid-1970s, when they settled in London. They collaborated on writing jingles, for which they earned over 40 awards, and musicals such as A Christmas Carol (1963) and In the Klondike (1968...
