Sato, Kimilocked

  • J. Michele Edwards

(b Sendai, March 5, 1949). Japanese composer. In 1971 she graduated in composition and piano from the Tōhō Gakuen School of Music, Tokyo, where she studied composition with Yoshirō Irino. She attended the Darmstadt summer course in 1972 and in December began composition studies with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire, graduating in 1978. In 1981, after nearly ten years in France, Sato returned to Japan. On the recommendation of Messiaen she was awarded the Prix de Rome (1984); she was the first foreign recipient of the prize. Her works rely heavily on timbre and dynamics for shape and motion, and are characterized by rich, colourful orchestration, ranging from slow-moving timbral blocks to shimmering, virtuoso passagework.
