(b Villefranche, nr Nice, France, April 25, 1852; d Marblehead, MA, July 17, 1941). American bandmaster, composer, and music publisher of French origin. At 13 he entered the conservatory in Nice, and at 17 enlisted in the US Navy as a clarinetist. He settled in Massachusetts in 1870. An excellent soloist, he played with groups in and around Boston, including Harry Brown’s Brigade Band. In 1878 he formed the Salem (Massachusetts) Cadet Band, which provided music for the Second Corps of Cadets, Massachusetts National Guard, during the next 40 years, and for Boston’s Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company on its tours of the USA, Canada, and England. He also performed at 50 annual commencement ceremonies at Tufts College, Medford, Massachusetts. Very popular and greatly beloved in Salem, he was described as a modest, unassuming man.
