(b Corbara, Salerno, Italy, Aug 1, 1884; d New York, Nov 26, 1977). American bandmaster and composer of Italian birth. He began clarinet studies with Giuseppe Landi at the age of seven and later studied clarinet with Gaetano Labanchi and harmony with Camillo De Nardis at the San Pietro Majello Conservatorio in Naples from which he graduated with honors. In 1905 he immigrated to the United States and formed his own band, which appeared under several different names over a span of 71 years. As conductor of the Italian Royal Marine Band he made several recordings of Italian marches and operatic transcriptions between 1923 and 1929 on the Victor, Columbia, Brunswick, and Okeh labels. With the American Aviation Band he earned the grand prize at the New York Evening Graphic Music Festival in 1931, the highpoint of his commercial success.
