(b New York, Feb 13, 1859; New York, March 15, 1928). American violinist, violist, teacher, and composer. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Lilienthal pursued his musical education solely in New York. He studied violin with G. Weingarten from1869–75 and with H. Brandt from 1877–9. Lilienthal learned harmony and counterpoint under the instruction of C.C. Müller and instrumentation from Ernst Grill. From 1886–91 he played violin in the Theodore Thomas Orchestra. In 1887 Lilienthal received membership in the Philharmonic Society as a violinist. He also played viola with the New York String Quartet from 1891–93, after which he taught both composition and various string instruments and also composed in New York. Lilienthal’s compositions include a string quartet in E-flat, op. 18; a string sextet in D minor, op. 21; a piano trio in B-flat, op. 25; a sonata for violin and piano in G minor, op. 26; a string quartet in B-flat, op. 36; a sonata for cello and piano, op. 40; and several orchestral dances....
