(b Brooklyn, NY, Dec 22, 1959). American electric and acoustic bass player. He learned electric bass as a child and studied classical bass at both San Francisco State and Long Beach State universities. He is well known for his technical prowess and command of both instruments. He gained recognition as a top Los Angeles studio musician and moved to high profile stints with Chick Corea’s Elektric and Akoustic bands in the 1980s and 90s. He has recorded numerous albums as leader (first with GRP and then with Concord), won Grammy awards for playing and composing, and explored classically themed composition and performance opportunities. Patitucci’s studio credits include work with Herbie Hancock, Bon Jovi, Dizzy Gillespie, Queen Latifah, George Benson, and Sting. A NARAS Most Valuable Player award winner in 1986, he garnered multiple Best Electric Bassist awards from both Guitar Player and Bass Player readers’ polls in the 1990s.
