(b Genoa, Italy, c1725; d Genoa, Italy, after Easter 1800). Italian luthier. Along with Paolo Castello, he was virtually the only violin maker active in Genoa during the 1770s and 1780s. Also like Castello, he was primarily identified as a chitarraro in contemporary records. A handful of violins are known, all based on a fairly flat model, with short, blunt, filed-off corners, cheap woods, and a varnish ranging from medium to dark gold-brown. His scrolls are very personal, with hollowed cheeks, broad tails, and flared volutes. On his labels delle Piane latinized his name to ‘Augustinus de Planis’, and it is by this name that he is mostly known....
