The name, in various spellings (Scarlata, Sgarlata etc.), was common in Sicily in the early 18th century and there were several Scarlatti families in Rome and north Italy. Of their eight children, four were noted musicians; of Alessandro’s ten children two were musicians and another (Flaminia) was a singer in private circles.
