(b White Plains, NY, April 27, 1957). Canadian composer of American birth. She was brought up in Manhattan and received her early musical education from her mother, who was a piano teacher. Between the ages of 12 and 18 she studied the piano with John Verbalis; from the age of 15 to 18 she was a composition pupil of Allen Shawn in New York. Later, at SUNY, Stony Brook, 1975–7, she studied the piano with Nurit Tilles and Gilbert Kalish. At the University of Victoria she studied music theory and Japanese music with Jo Kondo, piano with Kathleen Solose and harpsichord with Erich Schwandt, and composition with Martin Bartlett, John Celona, Rudolf Komorous and Michael Longton (BMus 1979, MMus 1981).
