[Maria Gustava]

(b Halden, June 16, 1870; d Oslo, Nov 21, 1934). Norwegian composer and pianist. She was a pupil of Agathe Backer Grøndahl and Gustav Lange in Christiania (now Oslo), Woldemar Bargiel in Berlin and Massenet in Paris. She gave concerts in Norway and abroad, and taught at the Christiania conservatory from 1899 to 1906; she then retired because of ill health. Schjelderup is known especially for her 40 songs, but she also wrote orchestral and chamber works. Her music contains frequent allusions to Norwegian folk tunes.
