American euphonium performer and educator. Bowman began playing euphonium in his father’s band. His early teachers included Robert L’Heureux, Sigurd Swanson, and Rex Conner. He completed the BM, MM, and DM degrees at the University of Michigan, where his principal teacher was Glenn P. Smith. In 1970 he joined the US Navy Band as euphonium soloist and section leader. In 1974 the US Armed Forces Bicentennial Band named him section leader, and in 1976 he joined the US Air Force Band, where he remained as soloist and section leader until 1991. During his time in the Air Force, he established himself as one of the leading American euphonium soloists, performing recitals and clinics in the United States and abroad. In 1976 Bowman gave the first euphonium recital at Carnegie Recital Hall.
While in Washington, DC, Bowman taught as adjunct faculty at numerous universities, and he helped create the DMA program in euphonium at the University of Maryland. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in ...
