Flummerfelt, Josephlocked

(b Vincennes, IN, Feb 24, 1937; d Indianapolis, March 1, 2019). American conductor and teacher. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Organ and Church Music from DePauw University (1958), Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music (1962), and Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois (1971). He studied summers with Julius Herford, Philip R(alph) Belt, and Nadia Boulanger.

Flummerfelt taught at the University of Illinois (1963–4), DePauw University (1964–8), and Florida State University (1968–71). He then served for 33 years (1971–2004) as the Artistic Director and Choral Master at Westminster Choir College, where his choirs earned outstanding reputations. He was the chorus master for Il Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy (1971–93), and served from 1977 as the Artistic Director of Choral Activities for the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina.
