(b Oswego, KS, Aug 4, 1890; d Poughkeepsie, NY, March 24, 1957). American hillbilly songwriter, singer, and guitarist. The son of a prairie fiddler, he was playing the guitar professionally by age 15, despite having never taken formal music lessons. His remarkable ability to whistle two tones simultaneously helped him obtain work as a whistler and guitarist with popular dance bands such as the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks on radio station KDAF in Kansas City in the early 1920s.
