(b Beaumont, TX, Jan 17, 1941). American mezzo-soprano. She made her professional debut at San Francisco Opera as Siebel in Faust and went on to sing more than 130 roles on stages around the world, from New York’s Metropolitan Opera to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. Strongly committed to music of her time, Castle has premiered works by Argento, Bernstein, Bolcom, Heggie, and Torke, in addition to singing principal roles in the American and New York premieres of works by Bohuslav Martinů, Krzysztof Penderecki, Poul Ruders, Aulis Sallinen, Gottfried von Einem, and Judith Weir. In 2001 she was Queen Elizabeth I in the first North American staged performances of Benjamin Britten’s Gloriana. She is one of the foremost interpreters of Augusta Tabor in Douglas Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe, a role she has performed more than 50 times in seven productions.
