(b Aberdeen, WA, Feb 20, 1967; d Seattle, WA, cApril 5, 1994). American rock singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was born in Aberdeen, Washington, a logging town that became economically depressed while he was growing up there in the 1970s and 80s. He began to adopt a rebellious attitude shortly after his parents divorced when he was eight years old and his home life became increasingly unstable. As a teenager Cobain developed an interest in punk rock and its do-it-yourself ethic of anti-corporate politics. Influenced by such local bands as the Melvins, Cobain and Krist Novoselic formed Nirvana in 1987. Like that of other grunge bands based in nearby Seattle, Nirvana’s music was sludgy and distorted, but Cobain gave the band a distinctive identity with thoughtful lyrics and a vocal style that vacillated from outrage to sarcasm to despair.
