(b New York, NY, March 21, 1935; d Bar Harbor, ME, Sept 1, 2009). American conductor. He attended Dartmouth College (BMus 1957) and undertook postgraduate studies at Harvard and Brown Universities; from 1963 until1964 he worked as assistant to pierre Monteux . From 1958 to 1965 he taught and was director of choral music at Brown University and also conducted the Rhode Island PO from 1960 to 1965, when he was appointed assistant to Max Rudolf, the conductor of the Cincinnati SO. He became that orchestra’s associate conductor in 1967 and was its resident conductor from 1969 to 1974. Kunzel made his operatic debut in 1957 with the Santa Fe Opera Company in Pergolesi’s La serva padrona, and conducted the American premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Nose in 1965.
