(b Tippo, MS, Nov 11, 1927; d Hilton Head, SC, Nov 15, 2016). American pianist, singer, and songwriter. He grew up in the Mississippi Delta region, where boogie-woogie piano and the blues were formative influences. He started piano lessons in the first grade, learned trumpet in high school, and began chemical engineering and economics studies at the University of Mississippi. He played piano and trumpet in the army, and, following a second period at the University of Mississippi (September 1947 – December 1949) and the beginning of his career as the leader of a touring trio, he studied English at Louisiana State University (BA 1952).
