(b New York or San Francisco, May 4, 1935; d New York, June 30, 2016). American pianist. Reference sources give his place of birth as San Francisco, but in an interview in 1993 Friedman stated that his family moved from New York to San Francisco when he was very young. He began learning piano there at the age of five, and received a classical training which ended during his high school years soon after the family moved again, to Van Nuys, California; he became interested in jazz while attending Los Angeles City College. His first professional engagements were in 1956 with Dexter Gordon, Shorty Rogers, and Buddy Collette, with whom he also recorded. He toured with Buddy DeFranco (1956–7) and then returned to the Los Angeles area, where he played with Chet Baker (July–September 1957). Late in 1957 he travelled to Vancouver for Ornette Coleman’s first job as the leader of a jazz quartet....
