(b Bradford, England, Aug 6, 1946; d Vista, CA, April 15, 2017). English electric guitarist. His year of birth has appeared in some sources as 1948, but Gilbert (1992) and Chilton, in Who’s Who of British Jazz, give 1946. He received his first guitar lessons in his late teens from his grandfather, the jazz pianist Sam Holdsworth. After performing and recording with Ian Carr’s group Nucleus (1972) and working in Jon Hiseman’s group Colosseum (1972 – November 1973) he came to prominence with the group Soft Machine (late 1973 – spring 1975). He then left for the USA to join Tony Williams’s Lifetime, with which he recorded two albums. Over the next several years he commuted between America and Britain, working with the avant-garde rock bands Gong and UK and touring internationally as a member of Bill Bruford’s fusion group Bruford (1978–80...
