(b Charleston, SC, Nov 21, 1948; d Los Angeles, Dec 25, 2016). American drummer. After moving to New York in 1966 he played in Hal David and Burt Bacharach’s musical Promises, Promises and worked as a freelance with Roy Ayers, the popular singer Roberta Flack, and the guitarist Gene McDaniels. In December 1970 he became a founding member of Weather Report, with which he remained for one year. He then worked with McCoy Tyner (1971–2), recorded with the flutist Bobbi Humphrey (1972), and served as a member of Larry Coryell’s group Eleventh House (1973–5). Over the next two years he performed and recorded in the USA and Europe with his own group, as a leader with Coryell, and with Al Di Meola and George Benson.
