(b Chicago, Jan 23, 1929; d Aug 13, 2015). American tenor saxophonist and composer. He first played piano and then clarinet, took up tenor saxophone while in high school, and began playing professionally in the 1940s; at one point he accompanied Billie Holiday. From 1949 to 1956 he performed with circus bands, and in King Kolax’s band with Gene Ammons, who strongly influenced his playing; he also was a member of Sun Ra’s band in 1952. While with Kolax he made a number of recordings (1954–6), initially accompanying the singer Danny Overbea, and then under Kolax’s leadership, including Right Now (1954, first issued on Jazzville Chicago, ii, 1954–8, Top Rank 111) and Goodnite Blues (1954, Vee-Jay 136). He then joined a rock-and-roll group that travelled to New York (1957). In 1958 he performed and recorded as a member of the band accompanying Dinah Washington at the Newport Jazz Festival, and the following year he went to Paris with a song revue; after returning to the USA he played with Clark Terry, Howard McGhee, Joe Newman, Machito, Lionel Hampton (...
