(b Philadelphia, March 27, 1960; d Fredericksburg, VA, Nov 11, 2016). American electric bass guitarist. His father was the songwriter Morris Bailey, who wrote in the 1970s for the soul singer Patti LaBelle, the Stylistics, and Nina Simone, among others. He played piano from the age of seven and drums from the age of ten, and took up electric bass guitar in December 1975. While attending the Berklee College of Music (1978–80) he toured internationally with Sonny Rollins (1979–80), although he did not record with him. Bailey then joined a friend, the drummer Poogie Bell, in New York, working with Hugh Masekela and the singer Miriam Makeba. In 1982, on the recommendation of his close associate Omar Hakim, he replaced Jaco Pastorius in Weather Report and remained with the group until it was dissolved in 1986.
