(b New York, April 29, 1952; d Bronx, NY, March 8, 2017). American flutist. His year of birth has appeared in reference sources as 1952, 1953, and 1954, but he gives 1952 in his video oral history. He learned percussion as a child and was playing conga and timbales professionally by the age of 13. When he was 17 he began teaching himself flute, and he later studied with Hubert Laws. From the late 1970s Valentin played a fusion of Latin music, funk, and jazz as the leader of various groups, with the pianist and electronic keyboard player Bill O’Connell, Lincoln Goines, either Richie Morales or Robby Ameen on drums, and either Sammy Figueroa or Giovanni Hidalgo on percussion.
