Fennimore and Gerdalocked

Opera in 11 pictures by Frederick Delius to his own libretto after J. P. Jacobsen’s novel Niels Lyhne; Frankfurt, Opernhaus, 21 October 1919.

The first two scenes take place at Consul Claudi’s house at Fjordby. Two of his nephews, the writer Niels Lyhne (baritone) and the painter Erik Refstrup (tenor), are staying at the house. While Erik is out painting, Niels remains with Fennimore (soprano), the daughter of the house, and declares his love for her. Erik returns when rain threatens, and the young men listen as Fennimore sings to the lute about how she longs for the joys of life. The Second Picture shows Claudi’s garden, which descends to the fjord. Erik and Fennimore are sitting in a boat by the landing-stage. They disappear into the dark garden as Niels rows another boat to land. While he ties the boat, Erik and Fennimore return, embrace, and express their mutual passion; it was for Erik that Fennimore had sung....
